History


The Odisha Legislature passed the Sambalpur University Act on December 10, 1966. It began on January 1, 1967. Prof. Parasuram Mishra was the first VC. The Sambalpur University began in 1967 in a rented private property in Dhanupali, Sambalpur, and afterwards in an Ainthapali government building. The University moved to Burla's Jyoti Vihar campus in 1973.

The University's current campus is in Burla, 2 kilometres from NH 6. This university's campus is near Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited, VSSUT, and Hirakud Dam.

The Sambalpur University is in Burla, Odisha. The university is bordered by a 670 acre reserve forest in Burla. This university is considered a knowledge centre in Odisha.



Seven postgraduate hostels for girls (Narmada Ladies Hostel, Pravavati Devi Ladies Hostel, Silver Jubilee Ladies Hostel, M.C.L Coalfield Ladies Hostel (new), Baitarani Ladies Hostel, Indravati Ladies Hostel, I.I.M-S Ladies Hostel) and eight for boys (Bramhaputra Boys Hostel, Mahanadi Boys Hostel, Bhagirathi Boys Hostel There is a common room with TV, a reading room with newspapers and magazines, a guestroom, first aid, an STD telephone booth and a canteen for the boarders. The university campus has two nationalised banks (State Bank Of India and U.C.O Bank), one post office, one health facility, two auditoriums (Biju Patnaik and I.I.M), one police outpost, one professor residence, and one community centre.


Exams for PG diploma, MA, M. Sc, M. Tech, M.Phil, M.CA, M.B.A, and PhD courses are also held.

S.U.I.I.T (Sambalpur University Institute of Information Technology) is an autonomous constituent institute.

SUIIT offers B. Tech. in ECE, CSE, and EEE, as well as M. Sc. in Electronics and Bioinformatics, MCA, M. Tech in CS, M. Tech in ESD and M. Tech in CSE.

The university also provides DEM, DRAC, PGDCA, and PGDIRPM.

System changes


The Odisha government approved in 2019 the transfer of academic operations of 155 colleges under Sambalpur University to new universities from June 1, 2020.
Government Autonomous College, Bhawanipatna and Rajendra Autonomous College, Balangir will be promoted to University.

There had been attempts to make this a Central University.
